Old Point Comfort Sunrise

Portsmouth, VA - Cap May, NJ

Totals today: 152 nm   9 hr 35 min

Avg speed 16.9     135 gallons of fuel

Off the dock 0610.  Arrived Cape Mayl  1445

Outside!  SE winds 10-15 knts,. SE wide 2-3 foot rollers.  Overcast.  OK, so I won't be making any souflles on this run, but we're making great time.

1000 No change in conditions.  Although the sun is still behind the clouds, it is getting a little brighter..  N 37 45.817   W 75 25.728

1120 Sun is now out from behind the clouds.  Clear, bright blue skies.  No change in wind and wave conditions.

1345 Big changes!  We are nearing Cape May.   Rollers are now maybe 3-4 with a shorter duration between them.  But, the big news is... FOG!  Visibility is one quarter to half a mile.

So, do we head a little closer to shore and continue north to Atlantic City, or do we sneak in to Cape May?  Another two and a half hours of eye straining, plugging away with the seas and wind now on our beam?  Or, about thirty minutes of a tense, wheel-gripping ride

through the narrow pass making sure not to crash into the rock jetties?   Hmmmmm?   Did I mention that the radar is out?

Hello Cap May!  As we just enter the pass, trying to stay as far as possible from the rock jetties, out of the fog suddenly appears a sailboat under power.   A quick zig and zag (that's a nautical term for zig and zag) and we're in.

Docked up at Utsch's Marina.  Pretty nice goody bag; bottle of wine, soap, coupon for a free coffee, biscottis and more!  Plus, what a laundry!  Two Dexter Thoroughbred 300's AND a Thoroughbred 400!  Six Dexter jumbo dryers!  Very, very nice!
