Wednesday 11/04/09 Charleston, SC to Fernandina Beach, FL Trip Miles = 163 Time Underway = 10:13 Avg Speed = 16 Fuel = 140 gallons
Sleep when you can. Go fast when you can. Take it outside when you can.
Out of the City Marina at 0608. Trying the outside again. The forecast was for 4-6 foot seas with 20-25 knot winds. The reality... Two, maybe three foot rollers with winds around ten. Sunny. Clear blue skies. COG 230. Most importantly... FOLLOWING SEAS! Get 'em while they're hot!
Seas building to 4-5 foot rollers. Still, good enough conditions to keep going.
Suddenly the auto pilot went pretty wacky. Bob checked the rudder and saw that the steering arm was moving, but the rudder post was not. Put a crescent wrench on the rudder post and was able to get it a little back to center.
Slowed down and we were able to come in to Fernandina. The problem was that the key sheared. Once in we tracked down a mechanic, Dave. Dave brought a couple of keys down to the boat. Now, however, we can't get the collar on. Rudder needs to come up about 1/4". And the rudder sensor on the auto pilot seems to be off.. May have to hand steer the rest of the way.
Side note: Met The Rev on the boat across from us. He was in the music business for about twenty years. Seems that The Rev played guitar for Boz Scaggs. Amazing who you meet on the docks.
