Thursday 11/05/09 Fernandina Beach, FL to Daytona Beach, FL Trip Miles = 100 Time Underway = 7:36 Avg Speed = 13 Fuel = 233 gallons
There are not many communities that express kindness to strangers more than us boaters.
First, there was Dave. Dave was the mechanic from the Tiger Point Boatyard. Dave brought by keys for the rudder post after his working hours. Then, when it was determined that we had mistaken the size, he went back, cut two more pieces of stock, polished them up and brought them back to the boat. "How much do we owe you Dave?" "Ah, noth ing. There's been many times that people have helped me for nothing. I know what it's like to be stranded and in need of help." Then, he wouldn't leave until he knew that the key fit. "When that key fits, I know that my job'll be done." said Dave. The least we could do was share a beer and a cigar while he waited.
The Rev was on a huge Matthews motor yacht. He also happened to have close to a full machine shop onboard. He offered full use of anything we might need, tap and dye set, underwater camera, etc. Bob did take him up on using his bench vice to sand down the key a little.
Diver Dave. Well, we really didn't even get his name, so I'll call him Diver Dave. Diver Dave was on the docks taking a look at props on a fishing boat that had "hit something out there". Bob asked him if he would render his services to lift the rudder so that we could get the collar on. It was either that, or me and Jimmy were going to do "Rocks/Paper/Scissors" to see who would be taking a little dip. So, Diver Dave asks for a full briefing on what's going on. He then takes a dive with two of my favorite tools ever, a 2x4 and a sledge hammer. The rudder is lifted in about two seconds.
Total dive-time about five minutes. Still, supply and demand, high value, specialty service... "How much do we owe you?" "Oh nothing. It really
didn't take that long and I was down here anyway."
Other than the boating community there aren't many places where complete strangers give you the use of their valuable services, equipment and time and not expect anything in return... except maybe a beer, a cigar. a thanks, and a mental note to do the same for a fellow-boater whenever you are able to lend a hand. |

Thursday 11/05/09 Fernandina Beach, FL
The morning brought extremely high success. Before breakfast Bob fixed the radar and the auto pilot. We then took a field trip to the Fernandina Hardware, Paint and Marine Supply Store on 6th St and Ash. A classic, old school hardware store. No Home Depor, West Marine or Lowes required in the town!
So, got some tools needed to complete the rudder post job. Back to the boat and Bob worked the rudder post and Jimmy and I re-adjusted the dripless stuffing box (which is still dripping a little).
Off the docks by 1000. Staying inside today to make sure that all recent repairs are solid. I'm sure that they are.
All repairs held well. ICW slow and go with a bunch of No Wake and those damned Mannatee Zones. Arrived Daytona Beach around 1715 |

Yes, that's right. For those of you who made fun of me for saving my old Crocs "just in case", here's a Croc as a dinghy fender!
Nice House Boats
